Mahila Kalasala, Department of Microbiology, a
part of Post Graduate section, affiliated to Acharya
Nagarjuna University was established in the year
1997 with an aim to evolve innovative programmes
in teaching, research and consultancy. Although
started with an initial strength of 12 students,
the Dept. has now attained a full fledged status
with 27 students in each year with all the necessary
infrastructural facilities such as spacious, well
ventilated class rooms and laboratories. The laboratories
are equipped with sophisticated instruments such
as PCR, Elisa Reader, Double beam PC based spectrophotometer,
Phase contrast Microscope, Biofermentor, Orbital
shaking incubator, Lyophilizer, Southern and Northern
Blotting kits along with a number of other accessory
equipment. The Dept. has a green house to raise
the research plants. |

The
department of microbiology at Montessori Mahila
Kalasala was started in 1997. It is the endeavor
of our institution of higher learning to equip
the students with the latest knowledge information
and skills in the field of their study. The department
has excellent qualified staff members and well
equipped laboratory which includes sophisticated
instruments such as Lyophilizer, Rotary shaker
with incubator, Microfuge, Phase contrast Microscope,
Autoclaves, Laminar flow etc., useful for both
practicals and research purpose.
M.Sc
Microbiology is a scheduled two years course.
Initially it was under annual pattern but in
the year 2003 it was brought under semester
system. The medium of instruction is in English
and the pattern of evaluation of examination
scripts is a double evaluation system. The curriculum
of Microbiology includes topics like Bacteriology,
Immunology, Virology, Molecular Biology, Microbial
Genetics, rDNA technology, Cellular microbiology,
Fermentation technology, Industrial Microbiology,
food microbiology and Medical microbiology.

| Research |
| |
| In
the Research centre recognized for the Microbiology
and Biochemistry Depts. eight students are working
for their M.Phil and Ph.D degrees under the guidance
of Prof.N.Lakshmi and under Dr.P.Madhava Rao. Of
these eight one student Bhargavi.M got her M.Phil
degree under the guidance of Prof.N.Lakshmi in 2007.
Mrs.Kusuma Kumari, Assistant professor obtained
her Ph.D degree in March 2007 from SGB Amaravathi
University for her work on Microbial Biotechnology. |

Our
institution was accepted as research centre and
15 students are carrying their research in different
areas of microbiology. Recently a placement cell
has been constituted by the institution which
helps the students not only to improve in their
subject but also in their quantitative aptitude
and face the interviews. |

2005,23 students passed with 8 distinctions,14 first
classes and 1 second class.The Overall pass percentage
is 96%. Miss.B.Balabharathi
was the topper with distinction in M.Sc.Microbiology
for the year 2005 and the recipient of the gold
medal. |
